The San Diego International Airport Terminal 1 Replacement project represents a monumental leap toward modernizing air travel in theregion. Officially launched in September, the public unveiling of Terminal 1 Phase 1A marks the first completed section of a comprehensive modernization initiative that promises to enhance passenger experiences for millions of travelers each year. Located at 3225 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101, we at Bergelectric are proud to be part of an ambitious undertaking that goes beyond a mere upgrade; it is a multi-billion-dollar capital improvement program aimed at replacing the aging 1960s-era terminal. This project is one of the most significant transportation infrastructure upgrades in the region’s history, designed to facilitate smoother passenger flow and enhance safety measures throughout the airport.
A Collaborative Effort
We embarked on this project in December 2021 after being awarded contracts exceeding $100 million by the Turner/Flatiron Joint Venture, and the Airport Authority. Our extensive contract covers crucial infrastructure, including 12kV electrical distribution systems, 600V power and lighting systems, fire alarms, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system developed in collaboration with Vanderlande.
The complexities of the Terminal 1 Replacement called for seamless collaboration with a distinguished array of design and engineering partners like Gensler, IMEG, Syska Hennessey, and the Turner/Flatiron JV. Together, we navigated a design and construction timeline that typically spans a decade, successfully completing the work within an ambitious compressed schedule. The rapid pace of progress has garnered praise from team members, who have noted the challenges of balancing technical requirements, safety protocols, and ongoing construction demands—all without extending the timeline.
As our Senior Operations Manager, Jonn M., remarked, “This was not an ordinary project by any measure.” With nearly 1 million square feet of new construction, Phase 1A introduces upgraded amenities such as 19 new gates, 69 check-in kiosks, 66 ticket counters, improved security screening areas, modernized gate hold rooms, and enhanced baggage efficiency.
On the Ground: Skilled Workforce and Innovative Techniques
We successfully mobilized a talented workforce of over 260 skilled, local electricians who played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. The impressive scale of the project showcases what we as a Merit shop can achieve, demonstrating our commitment to quality and excellence. In our efforts, we embraced innovative practices to streamline operations, including Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), design-build delivery methods, just-in-time material delivery, and advanced technology such as TopCon Total Station for precise layouts. These methods ensured efficient project management and helped us track schedules and budgets through constant updates and strategic problem-solving, keeping the project aligned with its timelines and financial goals.
Environmental Considerations and Safety Standards
While enhancing the passenger experience was our primary focus, environmental considerations were equally crucial. We managed challenges such as mitigating the impact of nesting bird seasons and addressing soil contamination from oil and fuel, ensuring sustainable progress. Additionally,
Conclusion: A Testament to Excellence in Electrical Construction
As travelers step into the newly opened Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport, they will experience a spacious, modern design enriched by vibrant artwork throughout the space. Yet, the true heartbeat of the terminal lies within the unseen electrical systems, life safety networks, and sophisticated baggage handling integrators that support every passenger journey.
The successful completion of Phase 1A not only strengthens our reputation as an industry leader in complex electrical installations but also serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of everyone involved. This project reflects a collaborative vision aimed at elevating air travel in San Diego, ensuring that the region is ready to welcome travelers in style and safety for years to come.
